This month there will be a very eye-catching shopping cart in the Colruyt Lowest Prices store in Halle. Some employees are currently testing the self-developed “Smart Cart”, a smart shopping cart that automatically scans the products in the shopping cart and pays for them at the end. The Colruyt Group wants to target a specific target group that wants to make shopping more efficient but also wants to keep the traditional checkouts. This innovative development is currently still in the test phase, but is already a first in Belgium.
Colruyt Group invests heavily in innovation and digitalization of its stores and has developed “Smart Cart”, an innovative shopping cart that makes shopping faster and more efficient. Customers add their selected products to the shopping cart, which are then automatically scanned. At the end of the shopping trip, the shopping cart automatically creates the invoice.
Using smart sensors (including camera technology) and artificial intelligence, the shopping cart checks that the product is registered correctly. Using the tablet integrated into the handle, customers can monitor their current account and even view the Xtra shopping list, which is automatically adjusted as they shop. In addition, if the customer requests, the payment process can also be made via the shopping cart.
The “Smart Cart” has already undergone an initial test phase in the Colruyt Group innovation laboratory and is now being tested in the field by Colruyt employees for the first time. A detailed evaluation is then carried out to determine whether the test can be continued with customers in the next phase.
The traditional cash registers will not disappear at Colruyt. The smart shopping cart is aimed primarily at a specific group of customers who have little time and want to make shopping more efficient.
