Prime Minister of Sweden, Ulf Kristerssondelivered the document of access to the United States Secretary of State, Antony Blinkenin the American capital, certifying its historic entry into the alliance.
Blinken said he was honored to “be the first to welcome” Sweden as the thirty-second member of NATO, which is expanding for the second time since the Russian invasion of Ukraine just over two years ago, after Finland’s accession last year.
“Sweden provides opportunities in the Arctic and Baltic Sea”Blinken said this after the ceremony of presenting the instrument of accession.

“Sweden has a 200-year history of non-alignment, and before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, less than a third of Swedes supported membership,” the US official recalled.
“Then everything changed: after the invasion, up to three out of four Swedes wanted this unification”said the head of American diplomacy. “The Swedish people stood up and supported not only the defense of their country, but also everyone’s shared responsibility for peace,” he added.
Kristersson assured that this “historic” day for a country that is completing the inclusion of all the Nordic countries under the auspices of NATO and completing the inclusion of almost the entire Baltic Sea into the alliance, this is of great strategic importance.
