As you probably remember, we told you the day before yesterday Microsoft is removing WSA, the Windows Subsystem for Android, from Windows 11. This news was very surprising, because we are talking about one of the most important features of the current version of the operating system, and therefore one of the elements that Redmond uses the most to promote it and try to convince more users to switch to it.
WSA, which was announced when Windows 11 was introduced, ended up not being available by the operating system’s October 2021 launch date. Instead, users interested in this development they had to wait until February 2022, with the first major update to start enjoying the ability to use Android apps on Windows. An advance that, as we’ve mentioned several times, is an excellent improvement for Windows users.
So we can say that he was barely two years old, although it is true that during the same years, Microsoft was constantly working on WSA with improvements, updates, new features and more. That said, so far everything has indicated that the company is firmly committed to this technology, so we can be sure that it will last over time. This will not be the case, as the company itself has confirmed its life cycle will be terminated on March 5, 2025.
Because? What happened? Microsoft has not officially commented on the matter, but as we can read on 9to5Google, an engineer from the company gave an explanation via his Twitter account, and the truth is that it is even more surprising, and that Microsoft is removing WSA due to the lack of revenue generated by Amazon’s app store. Revenues that, according to the publication, were supposed to be responsible for covering the costs associated with the maintenance and technical support of the WSA.
As I already stated in the news about the announcement of this decision, it is true that the choice of the Amazon app store as the official provider of Android applications in Windows 11 It doesn’t seem like the best decision.because the limited selection of software present in it was able to act as a brake on the arrival of other software, and as a result, it generated more interest among users.
The fact that its economic performance has not reached the desired levels does not now appear to be a strong enough reason to remove one of the key features of Windows 11. WSA may not have performed economically as expected, but in that case Microsoft should have considered other alternatives, such as opening up the ecosystem to more businesses (Google Play would be ideal, of course), and even reduce the amount of resources allocated to WSA maintenance. Closing it as announced feels like a mistake to me personally.
