After the new DMA comes into force, Google is also making radical changes to its search engine. One of these affects Google Maps, a service that is fully integrated into Google search and whose results always appear at the top.
When searching for any address, restaurant, or business, we had direct access to a map that directed us to Maps and results linking to that address. This has not been possible for a few days. Your search engine isn’t broken: it’s more limited with other options.
Maps is losing its presence on the Google search engine
The Digital Markets Act, also known as the DMA (Digital Markets Act), forced Google to make the move. When you search for information on Google, Maps will no longer appear as much as before.
This affects all types of searches: addresses, attractions, facilities, restaurants, companies, etc. Google Maps will no longer be the first result in a search. In fact, even in cases where the Maps map itself appears, Google Maps does not open when you click on it.
“Maps that may appear in search results do not link to Google Maps. The Maps link at the top of the search page that links to Google Maps has been removed.” Google.
You will need to click on the “directions” button to indicate that we really want to turn on the service. It also completely disappears from the options applied in the address bar, where “images”, “videos”, “news” or “books” appear. We will no longer see the “maps” option here.
Europe’s goal is to give more visibility to third-party alternatives, which is why Google is losing prominence in its own search engine. It’s a sensible, anti-monopoly proposition, but it has an immediate consequence: Searching on Google is worse than ever.
The rise of paid results at the top of Google, European restrictions, AI-generated content (although these results are finally starting to receive backlash and punishment), and the constant fight for SEO are achieving the seemingly impossible. Let’s search on Google, but we can’t find what we want.
