Google’s Pixel 8 and 8 Pro have almost identical hardware, except for RAM. The search giant has now published some sad news about Pixel 8. The standard variant will not get the Gemini Nano, the smallest version of the AI model that the company announced last December. This is a bummer for Pixel 8 owners hoping to get mobile-friendly LLM on their devices.
Google confirmed in a recent episode of The Android Show on the Android Developers channel that the Gemini Nano will not be available on the Pixel 8. Terence Zhang, a developer relations engineer at Google, says this is due to the smartphone’s hardware limitations. It doesn’t specify what these limitations are, but the only difference between the standard and Pro variants of the Pixel 8 is that the former has 8GB of RAM, while the latter has 12GB of RAM.
It works on Gemini Nano, Pixel 8 Pro and Galaxy S24 series. The AI model offers features like Summarization in Recording app, Quick Reply in Gboard, WhatsApp and offline photo enhancement. The lack of an artificial intelligence model in the standard version further widened the gap between Pixel 8 and 8 Pro. You may want to keep this in mind if you’re considering purchasing a Pixel 8 device.
Google also confirmed that it is working to expand the Gemini Nano’s compatibility with high-end devices. Chipmaker MediaTek also recently announced a partnership with Google to optimize Gemini Nano for Dimensiy 9300 and 8300 chips. Additionally, the search giant also announced plans to integrate Gemini into Android smartphones starting from 2025.
