Google’s upcoming mobile operating system, Android 15, may bring satellite connectivity features for text messaging. Evidence of this feature was spotted by Mishaal Rahman in the latest Android 14 beta. Android Authority.

Google introduced a new Satellite Messages page in the latest Android 14 beta. Users with eligible mobile accounts will soon be able to “send and receive text messages via satellite,” according to the page. There is a button that users can enable this feature when it becomes available.

Although no carriers are listed on the beta page, clicking the More button will take you to T-Mobile’s page. This suggests that T-Mobile may be involved in introducing this feature in Android 15.

T-Mobile previously partnered with SpaceX to improve communications in cellular dead zones using satellites. SpaceX also launched Direct to Call satellites that can serve all LTE phones. So it’s likely that Google’s future satellite messaging will use this technology.

Apparently this function serves both normal communication and emergencies. However, as stated on the Google page, there may be delays in the delivery of messages and limited coverage in certain areas. Weather conditions and physical obstacles can also affect signal quality.

Google is also working on a “Satellite SOS” feature in partnership with Garmin Response, a support center ready to help users in complex emergencies. This feature is for emergencies only and can also support sending text messages.

Although these details have not yet been officially confirmed, there is no doubt that Google is working on satellite connectivity for Android phones. Satellite connectivity can greatly improve communication options for Android users, especially those in areas with poor cellular signal reception.
