In a surprise move, Xiaomi is removing this popular feature. Users will be looking for the background video playback option that comes with MIUI 12 and will no longer be available on HyperOS. The Chinese brand decided to remove it, presumably after being warned by Google.

Because the feature of playing videos in the background when the screen is off was only available to premium users. Thanks to this feature, which was previously available in applications such as YouTube, even users without a premium subscription could easily listen to the music they wanted in the background.

Xiaomi will gradually remove this feature from the video toolbar with new updates. The video toolkit has been widely appreciated for its useful features and has been added to MIUI 12. Now MIUI 15 (HyperOS as Xiaomi calls it) will not have the feature of playing videos when the screen is off. Still, those who want to use this feature will need to subscribe to YouTube Premium.

Attention MIUI 12, MIUI 13, MIUI 14 and HyperOS (MIUI 15) interface users! If you update the security app to the versions mentioned above, the ability to play videos when the screen is off will be disabled. This is not a problem and is officially stated by the brand itself.

Alright what now? Xiaomi needs to comply with Google’s policy and unfortunately this feature needs to be removed. Even though users are upset, there is nothing you can do about it.
