Microsoft continues to place ads in Windows 11, especially for its own software and services. The last thing was contain a QR code that links to your Copilot AI assistant applications. User reaction was as negative as expected, with the company paralyzing it after describing it as a “experiment”.

Microsoft isn’t shy about adding advertising to Windows. To all the Bloatware that is installed as a base, we have to add random ads placed in the main parts of the system. In Windows 11, ads are placed on the lock screen and in the Start menu, taskbar, or Settings. It’s not the best way to make the operating system attractive, users didn’t love it.

And Microsoft has a long history of advertising in Windows 11 (also in Windows 10). It promotes its OneDrive cloud storage service or Microsoft Office suite in half a dozen areas. The WordPad editor has already been used to promote Office Online and the Mail mail client for Office advertising, not to mention desperate attempts to increase the market share of the Edge browser and the Bing search engine. The file explorer in Windows 10 was also used for these purposes.

The Windows lock screen is one of the components used to place the ad. Microsoft disguises it as “tips” or “suggestions”, but it’s pure and simple advertising. The final idea is to place a large QR code on this screen. The code is linked to the Copilot mobile app download page and contains the following promotion: “Save time, learn faster and create dynamically through artificial intelligence with the free Microsoft Copilot app”.
