India announced this Monday the introduction of an amendment to Nationality Law (SAA), a norm that attracts much criticism for being considered anti-MuslimWe are just weeks away from a general election in which the Hindu nationalist government is seeking a third term.

The Indian Ministry of Home Affairs announced the implementation of the rules of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act passed by the Indian Parliament in 2019 in the X-Message of the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs amid high expectations.

Citizenship Rules (CAA) will allow authorities to grant Indian citizenship to illegal immigrants from Pakistan, Afghanistan And Bangladesh who arrived in the country first 2015 asylum seekers on religious grounds, provided that these not Muslims.

According to the regulations, this will only benefit people HinduSikh, BuddhistJains, Parsis and Christianwho come from these three Muslim-majority countries.

This law, passed in December 2019, sparked protests across the country against its provisions, denying Muslims the opportunity to apply for citizenship based on the criteria set out in the text, which contrary to secular principles India.

The CAA was criticized by the then UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. Michelle Bacheletwhich sought the involvement of the Supreme Court of India in cases against this controversial law.

Implementation was suspended in part due to the outbreak of protests and violent clashes between communities.

The approval of the standard in 2019 was one of the main promises Bharatiya Janata Party (BDP), formation of the Prime Minister of India, Hindu nationalist Narendra Modi.

The implementation of the law just weeks before general elections scheduled for April and May is seen as a move aimed at fueling Hindu nationalist sentiment, which forms a strong base of Modi’s vote.
