Little has been said about LPDDR6 so far, but all indications are that in a few months it will become a really hot topic in the technology sector, and there is certainly no need for it, because we are talking about what is called the next memory standard for devices such as smartphones and tablets. A standard that JEDEC (Joint Electron Device Engineering Council) has been working on for some time and which according to the latest information seems to be almost ready.

So as we can read in ETNews (in Korean), after a meeting held recently in Portugal with the main stakeholders, JEDEC already has all the specifications that define the LPDDR6 standard readyso the technical part of the definition of the standard is already done and directly related technology companies can now start working on its implementation on solid ground.

However, it appears that JEDEC will not make the presentation of LPDDR6 until the last quarter of this year, probably so that the notification occurs hand in hand with others related to the standard, with respect to the first components related to it. Most notably in this regard, many rumors suggest that the next generation of Qualcomm’s flagship SoC, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, which will also be introduced at that time, will be compatible with this standard.

We can expect Samsung to also reveal at that time or a little later that it has already designed the first LPDDR6 memories and that they are ready to go into production. In this way we can expect announcement at the end of 2024which materializes in the first products containing this type of memory in early or mid-2025 at the latest. It’s also possible that given the long lead time they have, some manufacturer will go ahead and bring us the first device with LPDDR6 memory at the end of this year, but that possibility seems less likely to me.

In fact, if all goes well in the manufacturing process, it seems more likely to me that Samsung is reserving its market debut with its Galaxy S25. And that would make a lot of sense, as my colleague Isidro already mentioned in the article I linked, that we’re hoping Samsung will again focus on AI, something that according to leaks, LPDDR6 would be particularly well-suited for. optimized and thus responds to the main trend of today.

Let’s remember that JEDEC officially announced LPDDR5 in July 2019, so it will be a little more than five years before LPDDR6 is introduced. But it is true that the current generation saw a significant refresh in 2021, with the introduction of LPDDR5X. The evolution of the standard, which coincides with what has been mentioned about the possible plans of Samsung and its future Galaxy S25, has arrived on the market first with reports created by the Korean company.
