Last year, Apple introduced the next generation MacBook Pro with the M3 chip, which was also recently seen in the new MacBook Air. At the same time, the company is also working on a new MacBook Pro equipped with a yet-to-be-announced M4 chip.

This news was reported by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who said that Apple has officially begun development of a new MacBook Pro based on the M4 chip. It’s not yet known exactly when we’ll see the new MacBook Pro, as the details are pretty vague at this point.

The current MacBook Pro was introduced in October 2023. This was Apple’s first device based on the M3 chip, which uses the same 3nm technology as the A17 Pro chip in the iPhone 15 Pro. Along with the M3, Apple also released the more powerful M3 Pro and M3 Max for high-performance versions of the MacBook Pro.

Along with the MacBook Pro, the MacBook Air and iMac have also been updated with the M3 chip. However, Mac mini, Mac Studio and Mac Pro have not yet been upgraded to M3. Apple may need at least another year to introduce its first M4-based computer.

The M4 is said to be based on the Apple A16, Apple’s next chip for the iPhone 18. It is expected to have more Neural Engine cores for AI-related tasks, both of which are expected to be implemented in iOS 18 and macOS 15. For comparison, the A17 Pro chip’s Neural Engine can process up to 35 trillion operations per second.
