The newly enacted Digital Markets Act (DMA) in the European Union marks a new era for Big Tech in Europe. At Apple they have had to adapt to changes, but they have done it their own way, and another of those affected is Microsoft, which has had a unique impact.

Thanks to DMA, European users will even be able to do something that Microsoft has not offered until now: uninstall Microsoft Edge or Bing in both Windows 10 and Windows 11as well as choosing other default settings on these operating systems.

In the post on its official blog, Microsoft announced the changes it has implemented in the Windows 10 and 11 versions for European users as a result of the entry into force of the DMA, and these include removing the Edge web browser, as well as the Bing search function integrated into the entire operating system.

OneDrive is another one of those locally installed components but it also we can remove it like other applications. It has been known for months that with the arrival of DMA, this interesting option will also be available in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

But in addition to this, the changes brought by DMA will allow web applications (whether progressive or not) to become part of the taskbar, and we will also be able to consult news with third-party widgets.

To use certain Microsoft services with Bing or Edge, the automatic sign-in process that was until now part of these components will no longer be performed and the company will present a new dialog box for us to sign in with the account we want.

This affects another element that is very annoying for many users: Microsoft forced us to use a Microsoft account to install Windows, but now we can install it via a local account and easily offline. It is exactly an issue that Elon Musk recently complained about, and this problem in the EU is being solved with this change.

There are also changes to the way user data is managed to ensure it is not used for “competitive purposes against the providers of these applications.” Microsoft will also offer the ability to download a copy of all data shared with LinkedIn.

News are part of the latest updates to the operating system and you can already benefit from these options if you have them installed. In any case, all this news is expected to reach all users. at the beginning of April.
