Artificial intelligence computers are the industry’s nom de guerre to boost PC sales in 2024. Many say it’s just marketing and others say it will be a revolution. Certainly neither one nor the other, but What does the term actually mean?

looking for answers Registration asked Robert Hallock, Intel’s senior director of technical marketing, to explain. We don’t know what kind of response our colleagues were expecting, but one marketing specialist pointed out the obvious when he said that PC AI was “any computer with the latest Intel processors”.

What is PC IA?

The arrival of artificial intelligence technologies to the end customer, thanks to the launch of developments such as ChatGPT, was one of the key innovations of 2023 in technological matters. Its deployment is expanding this year, and the idea in personal computers is to support the operation of operating systems and applications through artificial intelligence hardware and software, in productive, search, creation or security tasks.

According to Intel, an IA PC is any computing device that contains GPU, CPU which includes a neural processing unit (NPU) and the ability to process vector neural network instructions (VNNI) and DP4a instructions that help the GPU process video.

And little else, because the chip giant does not believe that “PC IA” is a brand that indicates compliance with a specification or with a specific capacity that is not present in other computers. It should be clarified that Intel had brands in the past defined functions, such as “Centrino” to distinguish computers with Wi-Fi or “Viiv” for entertainment computers. Today it still has some, such as “vPro”, which defines CPUs with hardware management and security for the business market.

PC AI

However, PC IA is not a brand or a specification and according to Intel’s parameters, it will be possible to include any current or future computer equipment in this group. Been said, Don’t let them ‘sell you a motorbike’ with artificial intelligence. Any PC will be able to run clients like Copilot and will be able to use AI technologies.

Of course, the Intel manager specifies that some large language models (LLM) will need significantly more RAM installed than the current minimum. This is something we already knew about the minimum requirements of the next versions of Windows.
