In Ukraine, a guide has been published to help content creators, journalists and social media users detect and counter Russian propaganda, especially when it is spread with the help of the latest artificial intelligence technologies.
The presentation of the guide, developed by experts from the Institute of Innovative Governance with the support of the Embassy of Great Britain in Ukraine, took place at Ukrinform.
“The topic of this guide is very important today, because … literally two years ago there was a huge technological explosion and artificial intelligence applications began to appear in the world that somehow make our lives easier, because most of us Anna Mysyshyn, co-founder and president of the Institute for Innovative Governance “We started using them to automate some tasks, and so they carry associated risks,” he said.
According to him, such artificial intelligence applications and technologies may pose the greatest risks in the context of the Russia-Ukraine war because many journalists and content creators use such technologies to create informational materials.
He added that in the absence of full-fledged verification of information generated with the help of artificial intelligence applications, a lot of misinformation and propaganda is being spread. “The goal of the Innovative Governance Institute was to convey to content creators, journalists, and the public how to ensure the safe dissemination of information created and disseminated by an AI application,” Mysyshyn said.
He added that the publication contains recommendations for various life situations, especially on how to recognize deepfakes, how to work with data, and the use of technology when working with information.
Like the authors of the publication note, the guide contains an overview of the possibilities of artificial intelligence technologies in content creation and a detailed approach to detecting Russian propaganda created with the help of artificial intelligence in the information field. It emphasizes the importance of checking and verifying facts.
The publication’s main focus is the responsible use of artificial intelligence in journalism and content creation and balancing the benefits and risks of these technologies. The guide covers important topics such as machine learning, deep learning, generative AI, AI “hallucinations” and the problem of deepfakes. The guide also examines the role of social media in the spread of misinformation and highlights strategies to improve media literacy.
It discusses the accountability of stakeholders, including journalists, AI developers, and media platforms, and highlights the need for ethical principles in the era of advanced AI technologies.
