Apple announced that iPhone users in the European Union will be able to download apps from their website, not just from the App Store or a rival web store.

This was reported by CNBC, according to a report from Ukrinform.

This opportunity will be available this spring and will require app developers to meet certain criteria, such as having an app with over 1 million downloads in Europe.

Apple said companies can also offer web stores for iPhone apps as long as they only provide access to a company’s apps.

The company added that distributing apps directly from a website requires “responsibility and oversight of user interactions, including the ability to manage apps and provide customer support and refunds.”

Apple still plans to charge fifty euro cents for app downloads outside the App Store, including web app downloads.

Europe accounts for about 7% of Apple’s revenue from the App Store, the company said.

Apple has previously fought for years against downloading iPhone apps from the internet, citing security concerns and Apple’s right to determine the user experience. However, the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) forced Apple to make changes to the App Store’s business processes.

As reported by Ukrinform, the European Commission plans to impose a fine of around 500 million euros on Apple for allegedly violating the EU’s anti-monopoly legislation.
