US House of Representatives passes a bill banning TikTok

The lower house of the US Congress easily passed a bill that could ban the use of the Chinese app TikTok in the US.

Ukrinform’s own correspondent reported that the vote took place on Wednesday.

The bill, which aims to protect Americans from platforms controlled by malicious foreign companies, was supported by 352 members of Congress, 65 opposed and one lawmaker abstained.

The document moved through the procedural processes in the House of Representatives relatively quickly; It’s been less than a week since it was tabled. At the same time, the Republican majority implemented a special rule that provides for an expedited procedure for voting in the presence of a two-thirds majority, rather than the simple majority usually required.

Although the TikTok ban passed the House of Representatives with bipartisan support, some lawmakers have raised vocal opposition. First of all, they advocated for the protection of the right to freedom of expression of existing users of the platform.

It’s also interesting that Republicans in the lower chamber did not support Donald Trump’s attempt to challenge the TikTok ban. However, mixed messages came from him. The former president initially argued that the Chinese app had no place in the US market, but at the last minute said his ban would strengthen Facebook and Meta’s position, calling Meta CEO Mike Zuckerberg an “enemy of the people.” Trump changed his mind dramatically after meeting with major GOP donor and TikTok investor Jeff Yass, but the former president flatly denied they ever talked about it.

The bill also must be voted on in the Senate and signed by President Joe Biden.

As reported, there are concerns in the US that Chinese company ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, could collect sensitive user data and pass it on to Chinese intelligence services. In America, it is seen as a threat to US national security. In total, approximately 170 million Americans use TikTok.
