Mexican Association “Family members of our missing in Jalisco” (FUNDEJ) received this Wednesday from the hands of King Philip VI IX King of Spain Prize for Human Rights, provided by the Ombudsman and the University of Alcalá.

FUNDEJ is a non-profit association that strives find all the missing people in Jalisco. In their choice, according to the organizers of the award, the jury highlighted “the high social and humanitarian value developed by this enterprise”consisting of relatives of the victims.

For his part, the Ombudsman Angel Gabilondoexpressed “all his affection and all his cordiality” to the winners, “putting above all the desire that Live this award as a hug, a commitment and an acknowledgment.”

“This award is intended to be a congratulation to you,” said Gabilondo, for whom it is a congratulation “for your work, your work to find missing people in the state of Jalisco, which joins numerous groups conducting similar search efforts elsewhere in Mexico.but also in other European countries and beyond.”

The founder and coordinator of FUNDEJ was responsible for collecting the award. Maria Guadalupe Aguilarwho thanked them for receiving this award because “it fills them with hope and strength to continue our work.”

He later stated:

We need full political will from the authorities, we also need international cooperation to stop this scourge and continue to explore search strategies that will help us find our missing relatives.

The Association Familiares por Nuestros Desaparecidos de Jalisco was founded in 2013 with the aim create a “support network in conditions of unknown location” As such, it offers guidance, advice, support and comfort to family members in the process of reporting, searching and locating missing persons, and contributes to “the promotion, protection and defense of human rights in the state of Jalisco.”

Jalisco is the state with the highest number of missing people in Mexico – more than 15 thousand since 2006, out of 107 thousand 327 registered in the whole country. In this context, FUNDEJ united more than 400 families and helped more than a thousand people whose relatives disappeared.

Currently, one of its tasks is to promote creation of the Human Identification Center with a connected national database, as well as training forensic experts to carry out “correct and effective identification of bodies.”
