India begins construction of three chip factories

The Indian government has launched a project worth around $15 billion to build three factories for the production of semiconductor integrated circuits.

This was announced by the country’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the online ceremony for the establishment of new ventures, Ukrinform reported, citing Hindustan Times.

In his speech, Modi announced plans to increase India’s semiconductor production and promised that India will soon become a world power in this high-tech sector.

The main contractor for the project will be the Tata Group, one of India’s largest industrial groups, which includes companies in the fields of communications and information technology, mechanical engineering, materials manufacturing, services, energy, consumer products and chemicals.

The Tata Group is expected to collaborate with a major Taiwanese chipmaker to set up a chip factory in the western state of Gujarat, which will be the country’s first semiconductor manufacturing facility.

Another company from the same industrial group will build a semiconductor assembly and testing facility in the northeastern state of Assam.

Another factory where the chips will be assembled and tested will be established by Indian electrical equipment manufacturer CG Power and Industrial Solutions Limited in the state of Gujarat, together with Japan’s Renesas Electronics.

According to Indian government calculations, the total investment in the three projects will be over 1.25 trillion rupees, or about $15 billion.

There is currently no information regarding the planned dates for the construction to be completed and the new factories to come into operation.

As reported by Ukrinform, TSMC, the world’s largest independent semiconductor manufacturing company based in Taiwan, announced the construction of its second facility in Japan.
