Customers who want to cancel their Azure subscription can now transfer their data to another provider for free. Previously, Google and AWS made the same decision.

With a short, dry announcement, Microsoft announces the waiver of so-called Exit fees in Azure, costs that a provider charges for transferring data to another party. Microsoft already allowed you to transfer 100GB of data per month for free, but now all restrictions on this have been lifted. Customers who choose to leave Azure will no longer be charged.

Date law

Google and AWS recently took the same action. This sudden Samaritan grace from the major cloud providers is no coincidence: the providers must comply with the European data protection law that came into force in January. This law specifically addresses the free movement of data and prohibits providers from imposing contractual conditions that could prevent this, such as charging fees when a customer wants to pack their bags. From September 2025, companies must have made the necessary adjustments, so Microsoft has done its homework well in advance.

Microsoft, Google and AWS apply the rules slightly differently. AWS is the only company that does not require customers to completely delete their account if they want to transfer their data. Customers who want to leave Azure must first submit a request to Microsoft to release their data.
