At least 60 people died in the shipwreck, according to survivors rescued by the Ocean Viking.

At least 60 people, including several women and a child, died in a shipwreck in the central Mediterranean, according to survivors rescued over the past few hours by the humanitarian ship SOS Mediterranee Ocean Viking, a non-governmental organization reported this Thursday.

Ocean Viking saved 25 survivors this Wednesday, two of them were urgently evacuated to Sicily (southern Italy) due to their “critical condition,” the organization explained on its social networks.

They are all in one a situation of “extreme physical and mental vulnerability”, after the boat they were traveling on, which left the Libyan city of Zawiya, drifted at sea for about a week before being helped.

“Survivors report that At least 60 people died along the way. among them are women and at least one child,” the NGO wrote, explaining that the boat’s engine “broke down 3 days after (their departure), causing their boat to drift for several days without water or food.”

“Following the rescue yesterday of 25 people in very serious condition, a medical evacuation was carried out in cooperation with the Italian Coast Guard. The two unconscious people that our team was unable to awaken were airlifted to Sicily.” explained in the organization.

All survivors “are under medical care and urgent medical evacuation requested two people were found unconscious and in critical condition.”
