Trump secretly asked Elon Musk to buy his failed social network Truth Social

We all wish Musk had chosen to buy and then destroy the Republican niche social network Truth Social via Twitter. But unfortunately he did the same thing. As the Washington Post reported, citing inside sources, Trump made Musk an offer, which he was apparently able to easily reject.

Unhappy days of Truth Social

Released in February 2022 Truth Social has been losing both money and followers almost since its inception. All this time, Trump financed the project out of his own pocket.

According to sources, less than two years after the launch, that is, in the summer of 2023, Trump asks Musk if he wants to buy his social networkIt attracted an audience of Republican supporters, many of whom had long been blocked from accessing other social networks. Around the same time, the service’s technical director resigned. Frankly, things weren’t going so well.

We don’t know exactly what Musk said. However It is clear that the deal did not happen. In February 2024, Truth Social received approval from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to become a public company by merging with another company, which would open access to investment. Trump will retain his stake in the new company – the media says the amount is $4 billion in the form of a 58-69 percent stake.

Musk has already taken questions about the alleged acquisition controversy but said only this: “I’ve never been to Mar-a-Lago” (A private Florida residence owned by Donald Trump). Representatives of the former US president also do not comment on anything. Instead, Trump Media spokesperson Shannon Devine joked: “We heard Trump and Musk discussed buying the Washington Post. But they decided there was no value.”

News of Trump’s possible bid comes after the New York Times reported last week that Musk, along with several other wealthy Republican donors, met with Trump in Palm Beach, Florida, to discuss possible donations to his campaign. After this, Musk wrote on his page on X that he “did not donate money to any of the United States presidential candidates.”
