He justified his decision by saying that “brutal repression” by the regime of Daniel Ortega and his wife and vice-president Rosario Murillo against the people of Nicaragua.

“The United States will continue to use all diplomatic and economic tools available to help hold the Ortega-Murillo regime accountable and support the human rights and fundamental freedoms of Nicaraguans. in search of a more just and prosperous future,” the note concluded.
To make this measure effective, the United States amended the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) to include Nicaragua as a “forbidden” destination.
The US Department of Commerce also filed an application today. tightening rules for exporting goods from the United States to Nicaraguaciting concerns about government human rights violations against citizens and civil society groups, as well as deepening military and government ties with Russia.
Nicaragua has been experiencing a political and social crisis since April 2018.This intensified following the disputed general elections on November 7, 2021, in which Ortega was re-elected for a fifth and fourth consecutive term, with his main rivals in prison or in exile.
