Google Chrome is improving its phishing protection with real-time scanning for new security threats with standard Safe Browsing protection.

The Google Chrome browser will be able to offer better and faster phishing protection with the latest update. Instead of working with a list downloaded from Google servers, the browser runs real-time checks for phishing and security threats when you visit new websites. According to Google, this would increase website loading speed and block up to 25 percent more phishing attempts. However, it requires more power from your computer. The latest update is expected to roll out later this month.

Safe browsing tool

The new update with real-time protection is made possible by Google’s Safe Browsing tool when used in standard protection mode. Previously, this tool worked with local threat lists that were downloaded every 30 to 60 minutes.

A Google study found that new phishing URLs can appear and disappear within a ten-minute window, leaving local listings not updated and users temporarily vulnerable. With the upcoming update, standard protection immediately checks newly visited websites against threat lists on Google’s servers.

More horsepower

This new update requires a lot more power on your computer compared to the old method, but Google says it works to make the experience smooth and fast.

The new version of the security feature will roll out to desktop and iOS later this month, followed by Chrome and Android. Chrome users with iOS get an additional bonus. The built-in Google password manager now also notifies you if some passwords are considered insecure.
