Scientists at the SETI Institute and the Mars Institute at NASA’s Ames Research Center have discovered a 280-mile (350 km) wide volcano on Mars that had been “hiding in plain sight” for decades.

This was reported by Sky News, according to Ukrinform.

The discovery was made as a team of scientists examined the possible remains of a glacier in the eastern part of Mars’ volcanic region Tharsis, near the planet’s equator and a potential landing site for astronauts.

Lead author of the study and planetary scientist Dr. “While examining the geology of the area where we found the remains of a glacier last year, we realized that we were inside a huge and deeply eroded volcano,” said Pascal Li.

According to scientists, the volcano, temporarily called Noctis Volcano because it is located on the edge of the Martian labyrinth Noctis (Labyrinth of the Night), has been seen many times by NASA’s orbiting spacecraft since 1971, but its appearance in the pictures was quite blurry. and therefore the volcano could not be detected.

Scientists say the volcano’s size and “complex history of changes” indicate that it has been active for a very long time. There is an area in the southeastern part where ice from the Martian glacier is probably still present.

The photo of Mars shows the remains of a collapsed volcanic crater that once contained a lava lake, pyroclastic deposits (made of volcanic solids such as ash, slag, pumice and tephra) and hydrated mineral deposits.

“We have long suspected that these minerals were of volcanic origin. Therefore, it is not surprising that we found a volcano here,” said Surabh Shubham, one of the authors of the study.

As Ukrinform reported, on March 14, the American company SpaceX conducted the third test launch of the Starship rocket system, created for missions to the Moon and Mars.
