A curfew is announced in Miami Beach due to unrest during spring break.

City Hall Curfew declared in Miami Beach to enhance security during the university’s spring break, known as ‘spring break’which in recent years have recorded acts street violence, riots and even fatal shootings.

The curfew will take effect this Friday at 11:59 pm local time and end next Monday at 6:00 am, authorities said in a statement.

The measure would affect an area that largely includes the south of the coastal city, from 23rd Street and Dade Boulevard in the north, the government line in the south and Key Biscayne Bay in the west to the beach in the east.

Businesses in the area affected by the curfew will be required to close early to allow customers to avoid violating emergency measures, city officials said in a statement.

“We have determined that a midnight curfew is necessary and appropriate to help maintain public order this spring break,” City Manager Alina Hudak said in a statement.

Curfew up to 72 hours

Hudak said the decision was not made lightly and that it should not come as a surprise since Miami Beach officials have always been very clear in their determination to “protect the public from the dangerous chaos that accompanied the spring crowds.” in recent years.”

In addition, city code gives the city manager the discretion to declare a state of emergency for up to 72 hours.

Council members and civic groups criticized last week that recent restrictions imposed by Miami Beach to tighten security had racist overtones.

On March 5, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced he would send more state troopers during university holidays to end the “chaos” and “anarchy” in Miami Beach.

The measure adds to a package of sweeping restrictions Miami Beach has approved to combat unrest, such as curfews, searches, bag searches upon beach access, breathalyzer checkpoints and early closures of hotel entrances.

In 2023, two people died from gunshots

During the 2023 spring break, two people died from gunshot wounds and more than a hundred firearms were seized, with nearly 600 arrests recorded over the past two seasons.

A chaotic and violent series of altercations forced authorities to declare a state of emergency and curfew after the shooting, which took place on the famous Ocean Drive, located on the seashore. (EFE)
