If there is something that we always carry with us and stores our private information, it is our smartphone. As a result, you are likely to have large amounts of private data in your possession in case of theft or prying eyes. And if there’s an app out there hours of conversations and personal audiovisual content, that’s WhatsApp.

However, it’s worth remembering that WhatsApp has a chat blocking function, but it has a key requirement that limits it: it requires biometric authentication. What if your smartphone is too old or basic to integrate fingerprint recognition? Well, you can’t use it. Good news for you: The latest beta version of WhatsApp for Android shows that the development team behind the most used messaging app on the planet is working to fix this problem.

You will soon be able to block WhatsApp chats even if your mobile phone does not have biometric recognition

The folks at WABetaInfo have thoroughly analyzed the WhatsApp for Android beta version 2.24.6.20 available on the Google Play Store and found that the chat blocking functionality has been improved as follows: add new authentication methods to choose from.

So, when a user goes to settings, a description will appear detailing: ‘Once activated you will need Use fingerprint, face or other unique IDs to open WhatsApp‘, something that previously (let’s say, in the current public version) only worked with biometric authentication. In this beta version it is possible to select other identifiers such as the phone’s access code.

Although this improvement may seem minor overall for those with a relatively modern or mid-range phone or higher, Innovation in tests makes a difference in devices without biometrics featurelike basic mobile phones (or mid-range – entry level and some that are a few years behind them).

And in any case, More authentication options for blocking chats is always a good idea for flexibility, for example in case you prefer to use other methods or if your device experiences a problem with a component used for these recognition tasks.
