The iF Award highlighted the development of Lenovo’s new six-legged robot dog, which uses advanced sensors to inspect, monitor and collect data on any type of landscape.
Lenovo isn’t the first brand that comes to mind when it comes to robots. But the innovation lab in Shanghai has been building robots for several years and thanks to the iF Design Award we got a preview of the so-called Daystar Bot GS, a robot dog with six legs. This robot has many advanced sensors and cameras and is specifically designed for inspecting industrial facilities and navigating difficult terrain.
iF Award unmasks robot dog
Lenovo has not yet released any official information about the Daystar Bot GS robot dog. We have already seen a preview of the robot dog by being named winner of the prestigious iF Design Award 2024 in the Product and Industry categories. The iF website says:
“With an advanced operating system, advanced sensing algorithms and robust IP66 protection rating, GS performs better in unforeseen scenarios and enables comprehensive data collection anywhere, anytime.”
Not the first robot
While we don’t immediately think of Lenovo when we think of robotic technology, this isn’t the first robot from Lenovo’s portfolio. The company developed a Daystar division that has been producing robots since 2020, where the four-legged Robodog Q1 was previously developed. This robot was specifically designed to navigate difficult-to-explore terrain. With Bot GS, Lenovo goes one step further: the six-legged robot is able to inspect, monitor and collect data anywhere and in all types of landscapes.
The GS bot was immediately compared to Boston Dynamics’ existing Spot robot. Bot GS has an additional pair of legs and a wider frame. Additionally, the design is said to give the robot greater stability and maneuverability compared to Spot, although this performance has not yet been tested. The robot dog Bot GS is scheduled to come to the Asian market in 2024, prices and performance are still being communicated.
