Since last year, WhatsApp has been able to convert voice notes to text on an iPhone, but the same does not happen if you use the app on an Android mobile phone. Now we know the same thing is coming to Android and you’re letting us know What a voice memo says without having to play it.

“Siri” was responsible for transcribing WhatsApp voice memos for iOS, so there was little hope of it rolling out to Android. Fortunately, the Android app’s internal code demonstrates this. Voice memos will have transcriptions on Android soon.

Transcribe voice memos without apps or bots

Today there are many resources for those who do not even want to see WhatsApp voice memos, but the best way to avoid them remains exclusive to WhatsApp for iPhone. There, WhatsApp has a voicemail transcription integrated into the app itselfwhich is much more practical.

Transcribing voice notes allows us to: read what the voice memo says (and notifications), without having to listen. On iPhones, the transcription, which is technically handled by iOS, appears right below the audio player.

The good news is We will also have transcription on AndroidAs shown by a few tips included in the APK of the app by TheSpAndroid. The text strings clearly mention a transcription function that uses the device’s voice recognition feature to ensure that the audio does not leave our device. Some of the relevant text strings are:

As we can read, it will be required on Android approximately 150 MB additional download for the voice recognition engine, but otherwise it looks like it will work the same as on the iPhone. The WhatsApp support page also refers to the transcription of voice messages on Android; we can take advantage of this, “if transcription is available and the transcription function is activated in WhatsApp, Settings > Chats“.
