We have previously discussed the rumors that Sony will discontinue the Xperia 5 series. “Xperia 5 series, RIP 2024,” said the speaker on Weibo. However, he did not provide any additional reasons to support his claim. We’re now seeing actual images of the upcoming Xperia 5 VI protective case, which not only hints at the design but also means Sony is actually working on this model and we’ll be seeing it in the near future.
Tipster @æ— æœ¬æœ¨ä¹‹äºº shared photos of the Xperia 1 VI and Xperia 5 VI cases sold on an online store in China. Notably, the Xperia 5 VI body lacks a cutout for the dedicated two-stage camera shutter button at the bottom right of the phone. The phone will not have a button, considering there is nothing wrong with the case itself. In addition, the body of the Xperia 5 VI also has a similar camera cutout as last year, providing dual cameras – the main camera and ultra-wide.
The predecessor of the Xperia 5 V offers a 48 megapixel 24 mm 1/1.35 inch main sensor and a 12 megapixel 16 mm 1/1.25 inch wide-angle sensor. It is noteworthy that all predecessors of the Xperia 5 series, including the original 2019 Xperia 5, have a telephoto sensor.
Another notable change in the Xperia 5 VI seems to be the updated wider aspect ratio. Sony is again switching from the iconic 21:9 aspect ratio to 19.5:9, as previously reported. All Xperia 5 series devices so far have featured a taller 1080×2560 OLED panel, and it looks like this panel will finally change, possibly to make the phone a little more one-handed and appeal to a wider audience.
