Pope Francis called on the Church in Latin America to work towards eradicate the indifference that exists towards migrants crossing the Darien jungle in search of a better life, in a message sent to a meeting of the border bishops of Colombia, Costa Rica and Panama.
“In Darien, with my migrant brothers and sisters. It is there that they await us, on the earthly shore of the sea of tears and death, uniting men and women, adults and children from the most diverse latitudes,” the Pope writes in his message published this Wednesday by the Vatican.
Francisco explains that “The Darién Gap, the jungle that is a triumph of nature, today becomes a real via Crusis that not only highlights the limits of migration management in the Western Hemisphere, but also “This fuels a thriving business that allows the illicit proceeds of human trafficking to accumulate.”
“Even the dangers associated with traffic and illegal blackmail, Rising incomes or stagnation in countries where these siblings are unwanted also do not reduce the attractiveness (real or illusory) of meeting the needs for employment and better living conditions or even the expected family reunification,” he adds.

And while there is a “hospitable brotherhood that welcomes with human sensitivity,” he also notes: “Unfortunately, there is an indifference that is bleeding Darien.”
“I encourage you to work tirelessly to eradicate this indifference so that when a migrant brother or sister arrives, find a place in the Church where you feel not judged, but welcome; where it can quench hunger and thirst and restore hope,” the Argentine pontiff called.
