When Microsoft introduced Windows 10, the operating system that was supposed to be the last Windows, that is, the last major version of said operating system. Microsoft’s plan was simple, adopt a operating system as a service within which it would be limited to issuing patches and updates to keep it fresh and up-to-date in terms of interface, security, performance and features.
The company wasn’t bluffing, Microsoft itself said at Ignite 2015 literally, that he conceived Windows 10 as the last Windows, and that therefore there will be no new versions of the said operating system, but only updates and patches under this new model that would make it possible from product to service. None of this ended up happening because, as our readers already know, 2021 saw the launch of Windows 11.
It was this launch of Windows 11 that raised many doubts about whether Microsoft really meant it when it said that Windows 10 would be the last major version of its famous operating system. The truth is like this society was not clear in 2017so in the end the decision to run Windows 11 was something that developed slowly and several years. The book “Windows Internals” published by Microsoft in 2017 allows us to understand this issue much better.

On one of the pages of this book, we can read that Microsoft meant it when it said that Windows 10 would be the last Windows. It wasn’t a bluff, but the truth is that they never really got the hang of it, and as we know, in the end, Microsoft eventually caved. The line in the book that confirms they meant it literally says it «it won’t be official Windows 11instead, Windows Update is used to update Windows 10 to new versions.
We don’t know why Windows 10 wasn’t the last Windows
And I guess we’ll never know. Microsoft has not provided official information about this, so we only have more or less credible rumors that speculate about the possible reasons why the Redmond giant decided to launch Windows 11. Personally, I believe that this version has reached the market due to the need to increase the operating system requirements to make it more secure and advancedand that’s exactly what makes me think we’ll see Windows 12 sooner or later.
WITH the rise of AIand with the increasing level of implementation it has at all possible levels, it’s only a matter of time before it makes the leap to deeper integration into Microsoft’s well-known operating system. This twill have a significant impact on requirements of the said operating system and could eventually end up forcing the giant to launch Windows 12 with new hardware requirements.
