Although ChatGPT has become the big star of the moment with its arrival at the end of 2022, the proliferation of chatbots that we have experienced over the past year has meant that, even if it is still one of the great references, the OpenAI chatbot they have to face increasingly strong competition. It is true that the part of her, specifically the one represented by the Copilot, can be considered a “distant family”, but even then it is still a rival.
And so, like these alternative chatbots since its arrival on the market, OpenAI has also worked to find proposals that make its service more attractive than others, and this is especially true for its paid version, since it is the one that offers the most direct way to monetize this method of access to your LLM. For example, it was the first to announce third-party add-ons, but this is something that its main competitors in the consumer market, Google Gemini and Microsoft Copilot, have already imitated.
That’s why OpenAI made a very smart move to announce GPT in November last year, some custom versions of ChatGPT created by third parties and that they would therefore be able to provide more specific and accurate answers within their area of expertise. Its launch was slightly delayed from the original plans, mainly due to the firing and subsequent recasting of Sam Altman, and also because at that time the long-awaited trial due to a lawsuit by a huge group of writers began. However, the opening of the store for users of the ChatGPT payment method was confirmed in early January.
So it’s been a little over two months since its launch, and according to many users, it’s possible to find some pretty useful GPTs… if you can find them. And this is not as simple as it might seem, because, as we read in TechCrunch, the ChatGPT store was full of spam and broken promises. Promises by the creators of GPT, yes, not OpenAI, which seems to be failing significantly to control what is published on the store.
According to a review of personalized chatbot offerings by said publication, quote verbatim, «The official OpenAI store for GPT is flooded Weird GPT tags that potentially violate copyright«. From versions capable of creating content inspired by copyrighted creations, to others that offer to bypass OpenAI’s restrictions on ChatGPT, to those that saw an opportunity to do business and offer personalized models that require an additional payment.
The problem, no doubt, is that while OpenAI’s policy for publishing its own GPT tag can be challenging, the checks they go through before approval seem exceptionally lax. This, of course, contributed to the enormous increase in the supply of these personalized chatbots (OpenAI counted them at more than three million at the end of January), but also to the fact that the evaluation of this feature by users is penalized.
