The U.S. Department of Justice will file a lawsuit against Apple on Thursday, accusing the company of violating antitrust laws by denying rivals access to iPhone hardware and software features.

This was reported by Bloomberg, citing its own sources, as reported by Ukrinform.

Due to this news, Apple shares fell 1.4% to $176.1.

This is the third time in 14 years that the Justice Department has sued Apple for antitrust violations, but the first time the iPhone maker has been accused of illegally dominating the market.

The lawsuit to be filed in federal court indicates that President Joe Biden’s administration’s antitrust fight against the USA’s largest technology giants is strengthening. The Justice Department is already suing Google, and the Federal Trade Commission is pursuing antitrust cases against Meta and Amazon.

Apple is also under increasing scrutiny in Europe. In March, the company was fined €1.8 billion for preventing music streaming rivals from offering cheaper deals on its devices.

The company may also face investigation under the Digital Markets Act, which came into force in early March. Rivals have criticized the new App Store rules, which will lead to higher prices for developers. Fines for non-compliance with new EU rules can be up to 10% of the company’s annual revenue.

According to Ukrinform’s report, Apple will pay up to 14.4 million Canadian dollars in Canada. Due to intentional slowing down of certain iPhone models with custom software (more than $11 million).
