Unsurprisingly, HBO Max will become Max. And it’s no surprise that, in fact, the merger of the HBO Max and Discovery+ platforms, from which this new service was born, was already presented in April of last year, a little over a year after the merger of their companies. . And in addition, although this merger was already completed in some countries last year, at the same time, the official account of the platform confirmed here that the change in Spain will take place during 2024.
Since then, we’ve had lots and lots of questions about dates, pricing, content, etc., and while not all of them have been answered yet, there are some that have thankfully already been resolved. And the first one, as we already indicated in the title of this news, is Max will arrive in Spain on May 21stand that in two months, at which time it will of course replace the service that has only been present with us since October 2021.
Another question that has been present since the announcement nearly a year ago was what would happen to those who subscribed to HBO Max with an introductory offer that promised a lifetime discount of at least 50% off the standard subscription price. And the good, very good news for all these people is that the official account of the Twitter platform has already confirmed to several users that the discount will be kept during the change.
There is also information about the plans, with some expected news, but also some surprises. The most remarkable thing about this is that indeed the service will offer an ad-supported subscription levelbut the surprise is that at least initially will not be available in Spain. In our country, we can therefore opt for the so-called standard tariff and premium tariff, which will differ in the maximum number of simultaneous reproductions, image quality and the maximum number of content that we can download for offline viewing. .
Here are the three announced plans with their key features:
- Basic plan with advertising: (not originally available in Spain) up to two simultaneous reproductions and content in FullHD quality.
- Standard plan: up to two simultaneous playbacks, content in FullHD quality and up to 30 downloads for offline viewing.
- Premium plan: up to four simultaneous playbacks, quality content up to 4K + Dolby Atmos and up to 100 downloads for offline viewing.
In addition, an add-on that can be contracted with any of the three plans has also been announced, dedicated exclusively to sports content and it promises, among other things, to offer live content from major events. The content of this supplement will of course vary from country to country.
At the moment there is no information, yes, about prices that these plans won’t even have a sports add-on in the countries where the platform will arrive in May, although they promise to report on that soon.
It has been announced that the service will maintain user account and profile information to make switching from one service to another as easy as possible. Further in this sense, they confirm that the application will be updated automatically on some devices, although on others it will be necessary for users to install the new software and delete the previous one.
So lights and shadows in this ad. The most positive thing about this is undoubtedly that Max aims to keep all the content available on the current service, with the addition of its own Discovery+ content, which is a very interesting combination, since the former focuses on fiction, while the latter undoubtedly stands out in reality. TV content, to which we must add the suggestion of sports content that will arrive with an add-on of this type.
Now that I see the announced plans and wait for their prices to be confirmed, I have a feeling that current accounts (with the current price) will be migrated to the standard plan, reducing the maximum quality with which we can enjoy the content. As I indicated earlier, their prices have not yet been revealed, but I get the impression that the standard Max plan will have the same current price of €9.99 per month as the only modality currently available. This means that users will gain in the quantity of content, but on the other hand they will lose in the quality of the image and sound. and also in simultaneous reproductions, which will drop from 3 to 2.
We also don’t know if the 50% lifetime offer will be repeated before launch, which would undoubtedly be great news for users who regretted not taking advantage of it in October 2021, and for those who, while not interested in the current service, will want to subscribe to Max in May.
