Italian archaeologists discovered five wooden boats carved from different types of wood at the early Neolithic settlement of La Marmotta, located today at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea.
According to radiocarbon dating, the boats date back to B.C. It was built between 5700 and 5100 BC.
The largest boat, approximately 11 meters long, is made of oak, while the remaining four boats, ranging in length from 4 to 9.5 meters, are made of alder, poplar and European beech. Researchers believe the boats were used for fishing and transporting goods.
These findings showed that Stone Age shipbuilders were aware of a variety of technologies; for example, they used transverse hull reinforcement, which increased the durability of the boats.
