The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on Thursday to promote safe and reliable artificial intelligence systems that will contribute to sustainable development in the world.

As Vlaskor reported to Ukrinform in New York, the resolution “Using the opportunities of safe, secure and reliable artificial intelligence systems for sustainable development”, co-authored by 120 countries under the leadership of the USA, was adopted unanimously – without a vote.

The document emphasizes the importance of observing and protecting human rights in the design, development, implementation and use of artificial intelligence.

The General Assembly also recognized the important role of artificial intelligence systems in ensuring progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals.

The decision calls on all member states and stakeholders to “avoid the use of artificial intelligence systems” that pose a risk to human rights.

All governments, the private sector, civil society, research organizations and the media should develop and support regulatory and governance approaches to the safe and secure use of artificial intelligence.

The resolution calls on member states and stakeholders to work with and support developing countries to close the digital divide.

US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield presented the resolution at the GA meeting.

According to him, the constructive dialogue surrounding the adoption of this resolution “will serve as a model for future discussions about the challenges facing AI in various fields, for example, peace and security and the responsible use of AI autonomy for military purposes.”

“We aim to complement future UN initiatives, including negotiations on a global digital convention and the work of the high-level advisory body on artificial intelligence under the secretariat,” he said.

The international community has the opportunity and responsibility to “manage this technology, not let it manage us.”

“So let us confirm that artificial intelligence will be developed and implemented from the perspective of humanity and dignity, security and protection, human rights and fundamental freedoms,” he emphasized.

“Commit to closing the digital divide within and between countries and use this technology to advance shared sustainable development priorities,” Thomas-Greenfield added.

The UN General Assembly resolution is the first GA document regulating the field of artificial intelligence.

According to Ukrinform’s report, the American company Apple is negotiating with Google about the integration of its most advanced model based on artificial intelligence (AI) called Gemini into its products.
