Scientists have created the most powerful “sound laser”

Chinese scientists have introduced a revolutionary device that produces laser beams of sound waves that are much stronger and narrower than any other “phonon laser” created before. Built on the basis of a microscopic sphere surrounded by a reflective cavity and excited by an electrode, this laser is capable of emitting sound particles (phonons) at an unprecedented intensity.


The phonon laser concept is based on the principles of quantum mechanics and the use of ketosis to produce sound waves similar to photons of light in conventional lasers. This discovery was made by Hui Jing and his team from Hunan Normal University, who developed the technology to produce more intense and longer-lasting sound beams.

The central element of the system is a quartz ball, no larger than an ordinary bacterium, located in a specially designed reflective cavity and acting on it with electromagnetic waves through an electrode, initiating the formation of phonons. These sound particles are then captured by the cavity and amplified until a powerful laser beam is formed.

The uniqueness of this device lies in its ability to generate phonons with much higher “brightness” and beam intensity than previously possible; This makes it potentially useful for biomedical and deep-sea monitoring applications due to the ability of phonons to be transmitted more efficiently through liquids.

But as Richard Northe of Delft University of Technology points out, the commercial use of phonon lasers faces a number of challenges due to their complexity and the need for further research and development. Only time will tell whether phonon lasers will have the same revolutionary impact on modern life as their optical counterparts. In particular, there is a need to create simpler and more affordable experimental setups that will allow phonon lasers to be integrated into various practical applications.

Despite these challenges, the potential of phonon lasers is still enormous. Its unique properties can open new horizons in medical research, especially in visualizing body tissues and studying molecular processes. Additionally, phonon lasers can be used in the development of new communication technologies and precision measurement systems.

As a result, although phonon lasers are still in the early stages of development, their ability to produce high-quality sound beams is already attracting significant scientific and technological interest. Ongoing research in this area promises to create new possibilities for using sound at the quantum level.
