SB4 is an election issue; Abbott aims to support Trump: Miguel Basanez

In response to a dispute anti-immigrant law SB4 Texas in the US, Mexico said it will file a legal brief against the law this Thursday.

Mexican Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena announced the action, highlighting the country’s strong opposition to measures that criminalize migration and facilitate the detention and deportation of people suspected of entering the United States illegally.

Former Mexican Ambassador to the United States, Miguel Basanez, shared his views on “Aristegui Live” under Texas Governor Gregg Abbott’s SB4, indicating that Mexico is taking appropriate action to protect the rights of migrants and against legislation that constitutes “racist and contrary to fundamental international principles.”

“Mexico is doing the right thing and what it deserves,” he said.

He highlighted Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s lack of attention to Mexico, even though the country is the state’s main trading partner.

Basanes expressed concern about discriminatory nature of SB4which gives local authorities the power to detain and deport people based on their appearance, and stressed the importance of Mexico’s stance against the repatriation of migrants affected by the ruling.

According to Basanez, Immigration matters are under federal jurisdiction and should not be regulated by state or local authorities, as this could lead to chaos in bilateral relations between Mexico and the United States. At the same time, he recalled a similar precedent in Arizona during Calderon’s presidency, where the Supreme Court rejected similar measures.

The former ambassador argues that the law operates in the context Political polarization and electoral opportunism behind Abbott’s proposal.

“This comes at a time of polarization and elections,” Basanes said.

He explained that Abbott seeks to support Trump and the Republican Party, ignoring the important economic and social contributions of migrants, especially the Latino community, to the U.S. economy.

“The contributions of Hispanics to the United States economy are significant,” Basañez said. “If we could estimate its size, it would be the fifth or sixth largest economy in the world.”

He came to the conclusion that these measures not only strain the already complicated relations between Mexico and the United States, but they also impede the economic and social progress of both countries.
