US Space Force Brigadier General Anthony Mastalir expressed fears that China could use lunar space to attack American satellites.
Despite the race to the moon between China and the United States, the American Space Force is still focused on terrestrial conflicts, according to Mastalir. But the military has suggested that China may stop adhering to the space treaty, which requires all countries to use space for peaceful purposes only.
“From a military perspective, I’m interested in whether there are attack vectors that we haven’t considered or that we need to address,” Mastalir said.
He identified two main areas of concern. The first is outside geostationary orbit, where there are many satellites, and the second is the lunar field. Considering the number of satellites performing various tasks in orbit, it is quite logical to worry about their security. China’s presence on the moon could potentially give it a new attack vector in Earth orbit, Mastalir said.
