HP recycles China-tailored Nvidia GPUs in new Z workstations

HP will integrate Nvidia A800 GPUs into its Z AI workstations. This way, the GPUs that Nvidia developed specifically for the Chinese market will still be useful even after the US export ban.

HP will integrate Nvidia A800 accelerators into its Z AI workstations. This is noticeable because Nvidia initially developed the A800 specifically for the Chinese market. The A800 is a slimmed down version of the A100, which was launched in 2022 to circumvent the then ban on technology exports to China. The US set a cap on the amount of computing power that was prohibited from being exported, and the A800 was just below that.

Change rules

However, the USA has now revised the export regulations and thus made the sale of the Nvidia A800 in China illegal. The chip is intended as an accelerator for data centers and may still be sold in other markets, but those interested there would prefer to buy a faster A100 (or H100).

In order not to lose the work and the chips, Nvidia decided to rebrand. The A800 is now a workstation GPU and HP is the first to join the story. Of course, the HP Z AI workstations have a big focus on artificial intelligence, where these chips can provide the necessary acceleration. They are basically interesting for any developer who wants GPU computing power.
