Artificial intelligence (AI) will be used for the first time to track hedgehog populations as part of a project to understand how many are left in the UK.

According to Ukrinform, The Guardian is reporting on this issue.

“For the first time in the history of hedgehog conservation, we are using artificial intelligence to unlock new possibilities, and this is hugely exciting. Previous studies have already assessed hedgehog populations, but a comprehensive national survey of them has not yet been conducted,” he said at the People’s Trust for Endangered Species Henrietta Pringle, coordinator of the National Hedgehog Monitoring Program (NHMP).

Footage of spiny mammals roaming city parks, private gardens, forests and farmland will be captured by cameras and filtered by artificial intelligence that has already been trained to distinguish wildlife from humans, it said.

The images will then be sent to people who will select images showing hedgehogs, then to analysts who will record the number and location of the mammals.

NHMP hopes to use this method to obtain data on hedgehog populations in different habitats across the country; to show how they change from year to year and then give an estimate of the hedgehog population in Great Britain.

As reported by Ukrinform, Ukrainian startups have created a collar communication device for cats that uses artificial intelligence to convert animal sounds into a form that humans can understand. The gadget works like a fitness bracelet.
