Apple is testing new Pencil for its Vision Pro headset

It’s only been a few months since Apple launched its new Vision Pro mixed reality headset. Apple is said to be conducting internal testing of a new headset-powered Apple Pencil. This will allow users to draw directly in Vision Pro programs such as Freeform and Pixelmator. Read on to learn more.

Details on how the Vision Pro’s operating system, VisionOS, will integrate Apple Pencil support remain unclear. But one exciting possibility involves using a pen to draw on real-world surfaces, such as desktop computers, and displaying those drawings in real time, with pressure and tilt precision, in the Vision Pro’s virtual space. It effectively transforms your environment into a giant canvas for creative expression.

The new Apple Pencil may come with the upcoming iPad Pro and iPad Air refresh in April, but there is no confirmation yet on its compatibility with VisionOS. Compatibility is also subject to software updates and it is unknown in which version this feature will be available. The first beta of VisionOS 1.2 may be available to developers this week, and VisionOS 2 will be announced at WWDC in June.

As with many of Apple’s current projects, it’s important to note that even if this Apple Pencil with VisionOS passes internal testing, there’s no guarantee of a final version. But the prospect of drawing in the air with Apple Pencil is certainly something special, and future developments are worth keeping an eye on.
