After installing a current security patch, Windows Server may experience a memory leak. There is a solution.

Microsoft admits there was a bug in a security update rolled out to Windows Server this month. A memory leak can crash domain controllers and trigger unwanted reboots. The error is caused by Kerberos authentication requests crashing the Local Security Authority Subsystem Service store and can occur in Windows Server 2022, 2019, 2016, and 2012.

A patch has been available since March 22nd and Microsoft recommends only installing these updated versions. Updates KB5037422 (Windows Server 2022), KB5037423 (Windows Server 2016), and KB5037425 (Windows Server 2019) are the approved versions. Therefore, under no circumstances should you install versions KB5035857 (Windows Server 2022), KB5034849 (Windows Server 2019) or KB5035855 (Windows Server 2016), which were rolled out on March 12th. These are also cumulative updates, so with the new patches you also add the security improvements from the previous update.

If it’s not yet possible to update Windows Server, you can also uninstall the unfortunate update as a temporary solution, according to a Reddit forum for Windows Server administrators. This can be done with the following command:

wusa /uninstall /kb:5035857 (Windows Server 2022)

wusa /uninstall /kb:5035849 (Windows Server 2019)

wusa /uninstall /kb:5035855 (Windows Server 2016)
