Gartner for IAM Identity Management

The cybersecurity landscape is becoming increasingly decentralized through remote work, third-party providers and machines. Gartner recommends focusing security on identity management.

Gartner hosted a security conference in Sydney last week. Gartner analysts discussed how companies can maintain control in a complex and fragmented IT landscape. The miracle cure: IAM, stretched out Identity access management or identity management.

“Today a CISO receives three questions from the board: Are we safe, are we compliant and what are we doing with AI? IAM is at the heart of these three questions. It is central to the security of the new world,” said Gartner analyst Felix Gaehtgens.

Rise of the machines

To those unfamiliar with IAM, it will sound like another acronym dreamed up by cybersecurity experts. IAM is an umbrella term for policies and technologies that ensure digital identities only have access to platforms and files they need to fulfill their assigned roles. The term “digital identities” of course includes human employees, but also autonomous machines.

According to Gartner, the increase in machine identities increases the need for an IAM strategy. A typical organization has 10 to 45 times more machines hanging around in the IT environment than before. Additionally, machines often have a lot of privileges, making them unguided cybersecurity missiles if not kept in check. Additionally, telecommuting and external providers also create a fragmented IT environment that is complex to manage.

3 Cs

According to Gartner, three pillars are critical to implementing IAM: consistency, context and continuity. “Just because someone has access to a folder doesn’t mean they have to download 30 documents per minute. This is atypical for a human and could be an indication that their account has been taken over by a bot,” said Gaehtgens.

Of course, something has to be said about AI. Gartner sees the potential for AI to take over certain aspects of IAM, such as analyzing user behavior or making policy recommendations. “AI can provide some added value as long as you also work on the necessary dependencies for data management and data engineering.”
