The US Attorney’s Office announced the arrest of five men in Texas accused of buying more than a hundred weapons need to be sent to the cartel in Tamaulipas.

The men were identified as Gerardo Rafael Perez Jr., nicknamed “Jerry,” 23; Francisco Alejandro Benavidez, “Frankie”, 23; Mark Anthony Trevino Jr., 24; Luis Matias Leal, “Vicho”, 30 years old, and Antonio Osiel Casares, 26 years old.

Perez, a resident of Laredo, Texas, allegedly coordinated the purchase of more than one hundred firearms in Texas for smuggled across the Mexican border and delivered to the drug cartel in Nuevo Laredo. (Tamaulipas), according to the indictment.

Five are accused of one count of conspiracy to traffic firearms.which entails a penalty of imprisonment for up to 15 years, and one count of conspiracy to acquire a firearm. with a maximum penalty of 25 years in prison.

The five were named in a formal indictment filed March 6 and were arrested last Wednesday, prosecutors said.

Perez, Casares, Leal and Benavidez are also accused of one count of conspiracy to smuggle goods from the United States and one count of conspiracy to possess a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.

The three other alleged accomplices named in the original indictment are Jose Emigdio C. Mendoza, Gerardo Antonio Ibarra Jr. and Gerardo Corona Jr., who were arrested in 2023.
