Intel is expanding the scope of its AI PC Acceleration program. This was primarily aimed at larger software developers (ISVs), but is now also intended to appeal to small ISVs and individual developers. The expanded focus fits with Intel’s ambition to build a large software and hardware ecosystem for AI.
The CPU specialist wants to sell 100 million AI PCs by the end of next year. The only problem: an AI PC is no longer really an option as soon as you close the door to the marketing department. Intel refers to computers with its Core Ultra processors under the hood. They all have an NPU on board. This is a chiplet that sits next to the CPU and GPU and is specialized for AI workloads.
However, the NPU is a solution in search of a problem. The thing can dramatically speed up AI workloads to free up CPU. For example, during video calls, you can send tasks such as background blurring and noise reduction from the CPU to the NPU. According to Intel, you save 1.5 to 2 watts of power consumption and can make phone calls for an hour longer on one battery charge.
In addition to video calling, there are about 300 other specific features spread across dozens of more general specialized applications that use NPU. Consider applications from the Adobe suite such as Photoshop or video editing programs. That’s actually not much and certainly not enough to convince the general public to swap their perfectly acceptable PC for a so-called AI PC.
It is with this in mind that you should consider this new announcement. Intel wants to convince everyone to optimize relevant software for the NPU. The more applications that can be proven to run better on an Intel Core Ultra processor, the stronger the argument for the AI PC.
The new AI PC Developer program is specifically aimed at small and independent ISVs and aims to provide a seamless experience for those looking to deploy AI technology. The program includes access to tools, workflows, an AI framework, and physical developer kits with the latest Intel hardware on board. In this case it is a new Asus NUC 4 Pro. Intel is updating its resource pages so developers can find all relevant information in one place.
Intel’s goal is to remove as much of the hurdles as possible for developers large and small to embrace NPU.
