Dark clouds are gathering over Atos: the French IT company made a significant loss of four billion euros in 2023. In the Netherlands, government customers are already preparing for possible bankruptcy.
Atos announced its annual financial results for 2023 yesterday. A moment that the company certainly wasn’t looking forward to, because the numbers are turning blood red. Despite stable sales of 10.7 billion euros, Atos recorded a net loss of 3.4 billion euros. A major factor in this was a write-down of assets amounting to 2.5 billion euros. Atos was also in the red last year with a net annual loss of 4.65 billion euros.
(Urgently) wanted: buyer
It is an open secret that Atos is looking for fresh capital. Some takeover attempts were unsuccessful. First the Czech billionaire Daniel Kretinsky contacted us in vain, and recently Airbus also withdrew. The fact that the French government is interfering in the affairs will not make a takeover any easier. Since Atos has many customers within the government, the French government prefers to keep Atos in France.
In 2022, Atos carried out a controversial restructuring, splitting the company in two. All activities related to data center, hosting, digital workplace and unified communications have been placed in the Atos Tech Foundations department, the BDS activities fall under the part known as Eviden. Eviden has recently won several major contracts, including from Microsoft.
Peace has never returned to Atos since the split. At the beginning of 2024, CEO Paul Bernaert resigned after just four months after the split also resulted in the departure of the entire C-level. With Paul Saleh, the French company already has its fifth CEO in 2.5 years: There are football clubs that change coaches less often.
Possible bankruptcy?
Atos also has several public sector customers in Belgium and the Netherlands. In the Netherlands, government customers seem to have little confidence in a good result. According to the newspaper NRC Handelsblad, the social security institutions and the Ministry of Defense, among others, are already taking āpreparatory measuresā in the event that their supplier disappears. Customers in our country will certainly keep a close eye on the situation at Atos.
Atos assures NRC Handelsblad that its activities are not yet affected. Sufficient capital would still be available to ensure continuity of services.
