Samsung introduces Galaxy AI for older devices

Samsung Galaxy AI was introduced with the latest Galaxy S24 series smartphones in January, bringing a host of AI features to Galaxy devices, such as Circle to Search and Generative Edit. Keeping with its previous promise, Samsung says this AI toolset will roll out to more Galaxy devices this week.

Starting tomorrow (March 28), One UI 6.1 will begin rolling out to Galaxy S23 series owners and Z Fold5 and Z Flip5 smartphone users, bringing Galaxy AI to older devices. Samsung also says that One UI 6.1 will be available for Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra, Tab S9+ and Tab S9 WiFi models this week.

In addition to Circle to Search with Google and Generative Edit, which were also added to Google Pixel devices after the announcement of the Samsung Galaxy S24, users can also use Galaxy AI to perform tasks such as Live Translation and Chat Assistant.

One of the most polarizing uses of AI by Galaxy owners, Generative Editing allows users to use AI to edit and enhance their photos, including resizing or filling in the background of a photo after removing an object.

In his Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra review, Chris Nicholls notes that while the AI editing isn’t always impressive yet, he’s confident it will be very good in the future. However, even in its current form, it produces convincing results in ideal situations. Samsung says “millions” of people have tried the new Galaxy AI features so far, and with today’s update, many more people will be able to access Galaxy AI.

For now, the One UI 6.1 update and the accompanying Galaxy AI features will be free for all users. But as with the Galaxy S24 devices, Samsung is ready to charge users for Galaxy AI features after “late 2025.” A note in the newsletter about One UI 6.1 coming to additional devices states that “Samsung’s Galaxy AI features will be available for free on supported Samsung Galaxy devices by the end of 2025”; This is consistent with the way Samsung handles Galaxy AI. S24 series. smart phones.

Additionally, as with Galaxy AI on S24 phones, some Galaxy AI features on older devices will require a Samsung account sign-in and an active internet connection, as some AI features are cloud-based.
