Ukrainian developers working on detection and identification of explosive objects tested their sensor technologies at a test site.

This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Economy, Ukrinform reported.

“We have been carrying out a study on innovations in the field of mine action for a year. to certain approaches and working in certain directions: sensors, delivery tools, software. In order for such developments to occur in a systematic way, we as a government, together with partners such as the UN Development Program and the Kiev School of Economics, are developing a single framework for developers – preparing technical requirements for the sensors to be used. Detection of explosive objects,” said Deputy Minister of Economy Ihor Bezkaravainy.

The tests are taking place at the State Emergency Service’s testing site and are being carried out by the Postup Charity Foundation as part of the MinesEye project, which involves creating a multi-sensor system to detect explosive objects.

The Ministry of Economy reported that developers are currently trying to teach artificial intelligence to analyze photos taken with an orthophoto camera and look for anti-tank mines on them. This will allow detecting plastic mines that the magnetometer cannot detect.

The UADamage development team is also using a magnetometer and orthophoto camera to survey the area, as well as scanning areas in the infrared spectrum. They plan to additionally use ground-penetrating radar in the near future. Over the course of the study year, the team reduced computing time from several days to one day, with plans to increase the processing speed to a few hours.

The tests at the test sites were carried out with the support of the United Nations Development Programme.

As reported, the Ministry of Economy has restarted cluster work on mine activity, which was previously coordinated by Ukraine’s international partners.
