South Korean media confirmed that NCSoft gave the green light to the development of Guild Wars 3, a very important project for ArenaNet, the developer of the two previous parts of the franchise. It wasn’t easy, NCSoft did an in-depth review of both the internal resources and means as well as the commercial viability of the game and considered everything very carefully before saying yes.
I’m sure many of our readers will know that the first installment of Guild Wars was born from a set of ideas originally intended for what was originally supposed to be Diablo III. This shouldn’t surprise you, ArenaNet was founded by ex-Blizzard employees and its success with the first game was huge, so it still has a sizable player base today.
Guild Wars 2 changed the formula a lot from the original, removing heroes and became a real MMORPG, because while exploring the world we can find other players, which did not happen in the first part. This second installment has been active for 12 years now and the truth is that many fans of the franchise, myself included, have been asking for a new game to bring a breath of fresh air to the franchise for quite some time now.
NCSoft does not have a good track record with its studio projects in terms of profitability. The only one that was really saved in that sense was ArenaNet the Guild Wars franchise that was profitable. It is no accident that the second part has received so many expansions, both paid and free, and that it has been subjected to a very careful and well-planned game-as-a-service model.
We still don’t know when Guild Wars 3 will arrive, but given that it’s in the early stages of development right now chances are it’s still a few years away. We also don’t know what graphics engine it will use or what its requirements will be, but it is very likely that it will end up being similar to the second part in this sense and that it will have a significant dependency on the CPU.
Guild Wars 2 is completely free to play and is undoubtedly one of the best games of its genre. If you haven’t given it a chance yet, you should, as it offers a huge amount of content, hundreds of hours of fun, accessible yet challenging gameplay, and graphically it hasn’t aged badly at all. Its requirements are also very low, so you can easily play it with almost anyone.
